The WSDDM Display

The WSDDM system provides the airport operations community with PC based workstations showing current data from local RADARS and weather stations. Data is updated automatically. The display windows are tailored to provide weather information specifically for the airport operations personnel in a concise and easy to understand format. Users can choose from 5 NEXRADs in the region as well as select preset zoom states or one of their own choosing.

Users can click anywhere on the RADAR image and get the closest 23 METAR reports, decoded into tabular form in the upper right corner window on the display. (This screen shot was intentionally created smaller than the actual one for the WWW, and the window shows only the nearest four). Click on a metar for a demonstration of how it works.

On the left side of the screen is a plan view image of the LaGuardia region with storm motion and area METAR stations plotted over the top. The yellow vectors are generated from an analysis of the OKX NEXRAD radar, located on Long Island, and the green vectors are generated from the DIX NEXRAD, located near Fort Dix. The tick marks on the vectors represent forecasted motion at 10 minute intervals.

The windows on the right edge of the screen provide quantitative information about the current conditions as well as a 30 minute forecast of expected precipitation. The LGA Selected Metars window displays the stations closest to an arbitrary point selected by clicking on the radar image. The window in the lower right corner displays two traces: a yellow radar reflectivity trace gathered from above a particular WSDDM snowgauge; and a pink trace depicting liquid equivalent precipitation accumulation. The dotted lines to the right of the red "now" line are forecasts.

There are currently seven reflectivity fields and two velocity fields available on the WSDDM system. Click on the menu to view storm reflectivity at each NEXRAD location. The surface conditions are not currently available [3/18/98].

The trend plot has seven features available to the user. The last three buttons display a plot of all measurements at each WSDDM snowgauge location. Click on the image to view the specified conditions.

Precip Rate Forecast Window

There are currently two fields, DIX and OKX, for three metar locations. Click on each button to view a trend and forecast plot for each metar. These images are taken from the December 10, 1997 case when there was a large storm moving through the New York area. The radar reflectivity can be viewed on the NEXRAD page. The same storm with a text description can be viewed by clicking the Precip Rate Forecast Discussion button. This page simply demonstrates the different radar fields available on this feature.
